Help & answers.

Common questions below. If you don't find what you need, email us, a real person will get back to you.

Questions, bugs, feature ideas, or help with your gear, we read every message. Please include your camera and lens so we can help faster.

Getting started

How does Shutr Scout work? +

Pick your camera and lens, answer four quick questions (subject, motion, lighting, and what matters most), and measure the light, with a live reading or from a reference photo. Shutr Scout returns a complete settings card for your exact gear and the light in front of you, with one-tap Quick Fixes to fine-tune.

Do I need to be online? +

No. The recommendation engine runs entirely on your device and works fully offline. The only feature that uses the internet is the optional Learn More explainers.

Is it good for beginners? +

That's exactly who it's for. Shutr Scout gives you great settings now so you can capture the shot today, and learn the "why" on your own time.

Cameras & lenses

Which cameras are supported? +

170+ bodies across Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, OM System, Panasonic and more, plus built-in-lens compacts, DJI drones, and iPhone. Enter your gear once and it's remembered.

How do I enter my lens? +

Choose prime or zoom, enter the focal length (or range), and the aperture (constant or variable). For built-in-lens cameras and drones, this is filled in automatically. Zooms let you set your focal position so the recipe uses your real widest aperture there.

My exact camera isn't listed, what now? +

Pick the closest body from the same maker and sensor size for a very close result, and email us the model, we add and refine bodies regularly.

Settings & accuracy

How accurate are the settings? +

The engine is deterministic, built from real photographic exposure rules and calibrated against field testing across many bodies and scenes. Every card shows a confidence score and the assumptions it made, and Quick Fixes let you nudge exposure while keeping your look.

The histogram looks a little dark, is that wrong? +

Often that's intentional. For RAW, Shutr Scout can expose to protect your highlights, it may look slightly dark on the LCD but holds detail you'd otherwise blow out, and edits beautifully. The "Understand your photo" guidance explains what you're seeing.

Learn More, billing & privacy

Is Shutr Scout a subscription? +

No, the app is a one-time purchase and every feature is included. The only optional recurring item is Learn More (AI explainers & composition tips): your first 10 are free, then it's about $5/year if you choose to keep it.

What data does Shutr Scout collect? +

The settings engine runs on-device and needs no account. When you use the optional Learn More feature, your settings and scene context are sent to generate the explanation. See our privacy policy for the full detail. We don't sell your data.

Do you store my photos? +

Your photos and saved results stay on your device. A reference photo is read locally to measure the light; it isn't uploaded to generate your settings.

Apple Watch & troubleshooting

How does the Apple Watch feature work? +

When you generate a recommendation on your phone, it appears on your Watch, live if the app is open, and in the Smart Stack widget you can glance at on your wrist. Tap it to open the full card with Quick Fixes.

Learn More says there was an issue. What happened? +

Learn More needs an internet connection. If you're offline or the service is briefly unavailable, you'll see a friendly notice, your settings card is unaffected, and you can try the explainer again later.
